  • Recall that CMS has a definition of what is a restraint, which needs to be included in the hospital policy
  • Discuss when a drug can be used as a restraint, such as when a double dose is ordered or when a drug is used off-label
  • Describe what constitutes the definition of seclusion, such as being in a locked room
  • Recall that postural supports for positioning is not considered a restraint, such as securing the patient’s knee during surgery
  • List two alternatives to restraint, such as the use of a low bed or padded floor mats, toileting, medication changes, etc.
  • Discuss that CMS requires an order for any restraint or seclusion use
